Guess Work performs Discreet Music (CASSETTE RELEASE AND PERFORMANCE) at SUPPLEMENTAL in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Added on by Paul Collins.

Hello friends,

It has been almost a decade since we last posted on our news page. Haha. What the fuck are we doing here?

Anyhow, we thought that Guess Work’s upcoming performance of “Discreet Music” would be a fine way to get things up and running again.

Guess Work is an ensemble of musicians that was brought together by James Corrigan and Paul Collins in order to play a rework of Brian Eno’s proto-ambient masterwork “Discreet Music”. By breaking up the piece into eight short phrases, James devised a plan in which each player could repeat a given phrase eight times. Each player chooses the phrase at random, and what emerges is a simple alteration of the source material that yields a strangely beautiful piece of music. We performed it twice in the summer of 2022, one of which was recorded and will be for sale in Cassette form at the performance.

The ensemble is an incredible group of players including Francesca Caruso (Violin), Sean Ali (Bass), Elena Juliano (Flute), Paul Collins (Electric Guitar), James Corrigan (Electric Piano), and Mela Sansone (Trombone). The great Aaron Arntz played Trumpet and Accordion on the cassette release but will not be joining us for the SUPPLEMENTAL performance.

We will be adding more info around the release soon, and have it up for sale on the site if we have any left after the show on Friday.
